Once again, I had work to get caught up on after lunch, so sadly, no cocktails accompanied my lunch at Nick’s, although a few on the beverage menu looked interesting, for future reference. I had a glass (actually, I think it was two) of the “Bee’s Knees” at another restaurant a while back and enjoyed it immensely; I wonder how the version at Nick’s would compare. During lunch, a woman seated next to Charlie ordered a coffee-colored concoction with a thin layer of foam that came in a large martini glass. It looked so appealing we asked her what it was; she told us that it was the “Expresso Martini” and added that it was her “go-to” drink. Another time, I’m going to try that too… and perhaps the “Nick’s Mai Tai” as well. But today was going to have to be a non-alcoholic day. There were six non-alcoholic mocktails on the menu, but none of those beckoned to me, so I just ordered a boring orange juice instead. When Charlie got his drink, I noticed that I was still waiting for my o. j. and reminded the bartender, Kelsey. It was totally not a big deal, but she took my glass of o. j. off our bill anyway. I wasn’t expecting that, and in fact, even pointed out to her what I initially thought was an error of omission, but she indicated that there was no mistake. It’s these nice gestures that make a great impression on customers, and a place I might’ve remembered as “where the bartender forgot my drink” became “that place with the nice bartender.”
