So, where’s this famous Louisiana cuisine folks talk about all the time? I don’t know, but I didn’t find it at Vyoone’s. Granted, the “Crevettes de Barbeque” that we ordered as an appetizer to share was very tasty. The sauce these sauteed shrimp were served in was very flavorful, so much so that it was more reminiscent of Asian cuisine than French. I could’ve made a meal just out of that sauce and a baguette and been happy as a clam. My companion offered me the final shrimp, and I took it, which, in retrospect, was rather cruel as it would be the last tasty morsel either of us would eat over the course of that meal. To be fair, my entrée, a grilled poisson (gulf fish) served with pappadelle pasta, wasn’t awful, exactly; the fish tasted fresh at least. But the dish wasn’t particularly good either. The pasta was way too al dente for my liking, and the lemon beurre blanc, as beurre blancs typically are (an epiphany I’ve reached after nearly a year on this fine dining adventure), was bland and boring. It was not the sort of dinner I was hoping for in a city often hyped as a hub for good grub. The fact that both guests at our table left so much on our plates at the conclusion of our meal should be a red flag for the chef at Vyoone’s.
