Brunch enthusiasts may be excited to learn that Foothill’s brunch menu lists 25 selections. I personally would’ve appreciated a couple more vegetarian options, but I’m biased, of course; to be fair, they did have options like the “Garden Wrap” and even “Vegan Wrap.”
Okay: So, the food review that follows isn’t going to be super flattering to the restaurant, but readers should bear in mind that it’s ONE dish out of 25, which is obviously not a representative sample. I debated between what I ultimately ordered and the “Omelette of the Day”; if I had gone with my instinct, the valence of this review might be completely different. In fact, even though my dining experience at Foothill wasn’t perfect, I intend to go back one of these days, if only to try another of their entrées. On this initial visit, however, I reasoned that ordering an omelet would be too boring and cliché, and instead, I chose the “Avocado Toast.” Described on the menu as a dish of avocado, wild arugula (“wild” arugula? Does the chef pick his arugula in a forest somewhere?), pickled red onions, and grape tomatoes on toasted sourdough, this was another one of those creations that sound better in theory than in reality. Perhaps if I had wolfed my lunch down faster, I could’ve experienced more of the dish’s theoretical greatness; in reality, however, the moisture from mashed avocados and pickled onions make a poor toast soggy while you chat over lunch. By the time I started on my second slice, it was already a little unpleasant; one bite of the third slice assured me that the toast was beyond salvaging, and I ended up just eating the remaining arugula (which I do love, whether wild or tame). At $16, however, the fact that I had to give up on so much of my plate wasn’t too painful. I did add, at an arguably exorbitant $4 surcharge, two sunny-side-up eggs to my brunch order, so I was still able to leave the restaurant with my appetite satisfied despite not finishing my entrée.
