Beetle House: The Drinks (Marianne’s POV)

Beetle House offers nine signature cocktails that were created perhaps more to captivate the eye than to please the palate. In fact, a couple of these cocktails are chilled with dry ice, which bubbles and smokes most satisfyingly, but which the menu expressly instructs patrons not to consume or even chew. Visually, these Burtonesque drinks are undeniably cool. I chose the “Coco Skellington,” a highball glass filled with a milky white liquid topped with a glob of crushed ice, ingeniously crafted to resemble a human brain. According to the menu, this concoction contains rum, gin, lime, crème de coconut, and orange blossom water (whatever that is), all of which should in theory, add up to something absolutely yummy. While I can’t say that I loved its taste as much as I was delighted by the cocktail’s appearance, the bartender did NOT skimp on the gin, and in terms of alcohol content, at least, my drink was well worth its $18 price tag. Besides the almost overwhelming taste of the gin, I could also sense the presence of the coconut cream. If “orange blossom water” is supposed to have a taste, then I failed to detect it.
